Seven Days Possible Rain, Ending with Snow/Sleet!

Seven Days Possible Rain, Ending with Snow/Sleet!

... PERHAPS, if the Weather People aren't  LY---ing ! This reminds me of my daughter's day care called Miss Irene's Bootie Camp. There was a little boy who had a problem with taking a nap. When his mom came to pick him up, Miss Irene said "... he didn't take a nap today". They got into the car, and the mom said to her little boy,   "Miss Irene said that you didn't take a nap today."    He said, "Yes, I did."    She said, "But Miss Irene said that you DIDN'T  take a nap today."    He said with a little force and a sing-song manner, "She's LY---ing!"     (It was he who was doing the lying!)   I dearly like this little story!

Also on Sunday night, a chance of rain, snow, and sleet. Monday a chance of snow! Tuesday night rain and snow likely. Wednesday a chance of rain and snow. Friday a chance of rain and snow.

I don't think I'm dreaming, am I?     It seems like I'm way up in northern New York in the lake effect weather!

Late this afternoon I cut the bad parts of my spaghetti squash (I was so disappointed that it began to spoil in the fridge), and simmered what was all right, opened my lonely jar of Prego spaghetti sauce, and had a delicious small serving of spaghetti!! The spaghetti squash works out very well in place of pasta.

I read on Facebook that my friend Kathy in northern New York makes spaghetti squash very often because her family loves it with spaghetti sauce. Now I know that it is really delicious, and I will try to buy another spaghetti squash!

Did you know that when it gets really cold, frigid cold, you must open the doors under the sinks so the pipes won't freeze, and you must let the faucets run in a trickle overnight? This doesn't usually happen in the south, but this winter is very strange. Let us hope that it won't happen again next winter.

I watched a movie this evening starring Sidney Poitier, it was "Brother John", and I liked it very much. The movie was made in 1970, and I had never seen it. You might Google it to see what kind of movie it is. Sidney Poitier is a very good actor, and I've always admired his talent.

I think it is time for me to say 'nighty-night', hit the hay, jump into bed, go to dreamland, and sleep tight. May all of you have a wonderful night, too.

Hibernating; Much Too Cold; The Brand New Baby.

Tuesday, January 28, 2014.

Hibernating; Much Too Cold; The Brand New Baby.

Yes, it's true, I was hibernating most of January, as some people do. The beginning of a new year is quite exciting, and it's cold, dark, and time to rest. Besides, when spring comes, we get interested in gardening, and being outdoors so much. January for us is the best time to hibernate.

But take a look at all those who love winter-time sports like skiing, snowmobiling, making snowmen, sledding down hills, shoveling snow, you know what I mean. Some like the deep winter, some like the warmer seasons.

The change in weather has been quite disastrous, with frigid temperatures, extremely cold blasts from the Arctic Circle, freezing rain, sleet, exceptionally deep snowfalls, canceling air flights, closing schools, and much more trouble.

If you've had an opportunity to 'hibernate,' I'm happy about that. As we get older, too, we cannot take so much cold weather. (Who said I'm older?) I keep telling my family that I am sixty-five, no, now it's sixty-six.

Are you eager to hear about The Brand New Baby? Time was passing the due date, and we thought that the baby should be coming along quite soon. Finally there was a signal, and the expecting mother was driven to the hospital. Nothing much happened most of the rest of that day, some laboring had been going on, but no great appearance yet.

The next morning family and relatives were thinking "This is IT!" Finally between mid-morning and noon, there WAS an appearance! A sweet baby boy made his debut and the close family and friends at the hospital were instantly thrilled. After about an hour or so, a picture of him was sent by computer so that all family and friends could see him. Many kinds of nice comments came from seeing his picture.

Within a few hours, I emailed my families:

Hello, you excited big family! Isn't it wonderful to have a new baby to think about and love?

Just a side note: Great Auntie said he is so cute. She said, too, that everyone is anxious to hold that cute baby.

But in my mind, the best comment she made is this one, "He looks like, 'What in the heck did I just go through?' "

And when you look at his face you can see his thoughts, "What was that ?" and another of his thoughts:

"I was in my cozy water room, expecting to see the most beautiful surroundings as the angels had told me, and then I was squished by heavy breathing, into a tight little corridor; those angels never told me about that part! and I thought I'd never get through that hallway; then all of sudden, the brightest lights ever, shone in my eyes, and the voices oohing, aahing, and trying to whisper, but they were so excited over I don't know what, and it was like shouts! The angels had told me to be patient, and not to cry too much, and I'm still pondering,  wondering where in the  world I am. I don't know these human persons, but I do recognize some voices! One of them gave me some warm food, thank goodness, because my throat was dry. I think I'm going to like that food."

Awww, he's here at last! And we are most grateful!

Thursday, January 9, 2014; Rain; Foods for Today.

Thursday, January 9, 2014; Rain; Foods for Today.

" It's rainin', it's pourin',
The old man is snorin' ".

Wow, it's been raining rather gently but steadily for a few hours already, I think. I didn't look outdoors before dawn.
It's cold, but not terribly. The forecast called for freezing rain, or sleet, or snow, but it hasn't happened here. Perhaps up in Memphis, it might be colder, and that forecast would then be actually correct.

Now for the foods. Sometimes I begin the morning by figuring out what I'll have to eat during the day, because I don't want to stop my puttering just to plan what I should prepare to eat. When I'm hungry, I like to take a small serving of this or that, or a snack, like a few nuts (I don't usually have potato or corn chips on hand, they're too tempting).

Irene had made a WONDERFUL POTATO CHOWDER several days ago, which was SO good, that she, Evan, and Miles ate the whole potful at one sitting. The young men (her sons) made a big request for her to make it again the next day. So she did, and they made that disappear, too. Then she was telling me about the potato chowder, and of course, I had to try something like that. So here is what I emailed to her this morning:

"  I did make some chowder the other day. I did have one small/medium red potato, but I wanted mayonnaise on that, so I used a turnip instead. I sort of followed your recipe, and put real cream in it, with the tablespoon of gluten free flour, and butter. It really tastes so delicious. The cream and butter really change this chowder.

But I think I should have boiled the diced turnip in its own water to make it soft. It is only al dente, not soft - the way I like veggies. I must remember to do that if I want to use turnip with anything. I have at least a cup and a half left of the chowder, and I'm sort of rationing it out for myself.

I just made a plain tuna salad with horseradish, horseradish mustard, mayo, and dashes of turmeric. It is yummy.

I also simmered, covered, a diced small sweet potato in very little water, and didn't have to drain it when the vegetable was cooked. Then I added the mayo, and frozen sweet peas. I have been doing 'the peas' several times now, with tuna, and sw potato, and potato. It's ever so good!

YUMMY! Now I'm all set for the day. Oh, forgot about some leftover Wonder Soup (Cabbage) with some milk added this morning, as another dish I can have during the day. "

Yesterday at some odd time, I heated leftover cream of buckwheat, and put a lightly beaten egg in with it. After it was cooked, I had it as a mini-meal. The texture of the pieces of the whites were really nice, the yolk was lightly mixed within the cream of buckwheat, and I thought it was quite delicious. So if you get 'sickntired' of having to eat the same old thing all the time, experiment, like I do. Sometimes I put a tablespoon of raisins in the soup I am making, and it does make it quite interesting ~ not bad at all.

Sometimes I have to talk about food. It's part of my genetic heritage. Let's say it is in my blood.

At the Gas Station; Hibernation.

Tuesday,  January 7, 2014.   At the Gas Station; Hibernation.

This guy was driving in Arkansas, and stopped at a gas station to fill up the tank.
He asked the clerk, "How far is it to Little Rock?"
The clerk said, "Oh, not really too far, it's just a stone's throw."

I used to go to the local public library when we lived in northern New York, and I went there with a fairly large cardboard box. The librarian would be a bit amazed to see our big cardboard box! She soon discovered our love for books. Our six little children loved books, and I would read to them very often. As they got older, they would read books a lot.

We had only one vehicle, and their Dad would drive it to his work place every day, so when I went to the library I would get a whole boxful of books (it had been agreed to, previously). It would be quite exciting for the children and they would be eager to see what I brought. Books for the oldest down to the youngest. It really was a great pleasure for me.

Then a couple of years later, we moved to another small village, and I would go to that local library. I grew to love the elderly English lady who was the librarian. She, too, allowed me to take more than a few books because she knew that I would return them all.

On a certain day just after Christmas, I was in the library talking to my dear old librarian, when a local woman of mid-age came happily into the room saying "Good Morning!" She then said, "Mrs. Moore,  can you find me some books that I can take today, because in January, I do not go out much ~ I hibernate! I'll be needing a lot of books for this." She was quite pleased to tell about how she would hibernate with a pile of books.

I was quite surprised, about the hibernation. See? It is legal to do this. After the stress of Christmas and maybe some traveling, we have a right to keep to ourselves if we need to.

Perhaps that is why this unusual, very bad, awful, pernicious, icy winter came around. Think about it, you can hibernate for a whole month to recover from the stress, even if you have to go to work. Just come home each day and take it easy, letting some of the chores go.

Happy New Year!
